Drumline championship delivers electrifying performances and community spirit at PBSC
On May 3, Palm Beach State College’s Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE) department partnered with Synergy Network, an organization dedicated to providing resources for students in the performing arts, to host the 2025 Chopped Drumline Championship.
The competition took place at PBSC’s Elisabeth W. Erling Gymnasium on the Lake Worth campus. It featured 14 drumlines from elementary, middle and high schools, bringing together approximately 253 student performers from across South Florida. An additional 203 attendees joined to support and celebrate the teams.
“The event showcased the talents of young people who, through hard work, dedication, the support of their families and training, prepared themselves for this event,” said Deborah Gordon, PBSC director of corporate and continuing education. “Hosting Chopped at Palm Beach State College enhances the College’s reputation for excellence in the arts and fosters connections amongst supporters and the community.”
From the very first beat, the Synergy event lived up to its name, as the drumlines moved in coordination, filling the space with vibrant rhythms that had the crowd clapping and cheering. The performances featured a dynamic mix of cadences, step routines and creative visuals that showcased not only musical skill, but also the commitment and hard work behind the art. “It was a celebration of creativity, teamwork and community pride,” said Dante Ferrell, PBSC youth programs manager.
The competition drew a diverse crowd of supporters, families, educators and community leaders, many of whom praised the discipline, focus and leadership demonstrated by the teams. The event served as a reminder of the power of youth-focused programs to create safe, inspiring spaces for growth and expression. Synergy Network continues to be a force for positive change, giving young people a platform to shine and develop skills that extend far beyond the drumline.
The competition closed with a standing ovation and excited buzz about upcoming performances, classes and opportunities for community engagement. Looking ahead, the College's CCE department is partnering with Synergy Network to offer a two-week music summer program, scheduled for June 9–20.
"Chopped Championship 2025 was an amazing experience. As a Palm Beach native, and someone who has watched the evolution of the percussion community over the last 30 years, I'm always inspired to see the students performing at such a high level,” said Ray Nelson, Synergy Network founder and executive director. “It's a blessing to be able to provide a safe and competitive space for these schools and students to come and showcase their talents. We look forward to continuing to grow this event, attracting nationwide awareness to the talent here in South Florida. Truly grateful to Palm Beach State College for their continued support."
