Mother and daughter don't let family health struggles keep them from graduating

olita Midget and her daughter Jeanise Darius experienced several challenges during their time studying at Palm Beach State. Those trials, however, didn't keep them from graduating or attending the ceremony.

Midget, a student development representative and the first in her family to earn a degree, earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Services and Darius received an Associate in Arts degree.

"This moment marks a prestigious and emotional celebration for our family, who immigrated to the United States from Haiti," said Midget.  "It brings me immense pride to hold our family’s head high. Even more special is seeing my daughter follow in my footsteps, continuing a new tradition of academic success and perseverance."

The greatest challenges during their time at PBSC was seeing the struggles of Midget's mother, who has been in the hospital for over a month recovering from open heart surgery, including a triple bypass and two additional procedures.

"Her journey has been physically painful for her and emotionally taxing for us," said Midget.

At one point, they even considered skipping graduation to stay by her side, but with the encouragement and support from family, friends and loved ones, they realized how important it was to be there.

"Walking across that stage is not just for us—it is for her, and for the dream our entire family has worked so hard to achieve," said Midget, who is a mother of three and balanced a full course load, internships, full-time work and caregiving responsibilities.

"It has not been easy, but I would not have it any other way. I truly believe this is my path and purpose."

Looking ahead, Darius will continue her studies at PBSC in pursuit of her bachelor's degree, and Midget will begin a Master of Social Work at the University of West Florida. "We are committed to using our education and experiences to help others as much as we can."
