From first-generation student to student trustee: Michael Derilus steps up to lead at PBSC

First-generation student Michael Derilus never imagined he’d be sitting at the same table as Palm Beach State College’s leaders — but that’s exactly where he’ll be this year, serving as the College’s 2025-26 student trustee.

Chosen out of 11 candidates, the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College scholar is now the official voice of more than 40,000 students, making him the 25th student to hold the role.

“It’s important to me that students feel heard,” says Derilus, who is currently studying computer science. “Behind every statistic is a story, and behind every decision, students should always have a seat at the table.”

From uncertain beginnings to finding belonging
Derilus’ path wasn’t straightforward. In high school at Lake Worth Community, he watched his classmates chatter about GPAs, bright futures, and impressive college plans. He had none of that. By his own admission, he hadn’t done anything noteworthy.

Then, one day, he walked into his guidance counselor’s office and asked a simple but life-changing question: What can I do?

His advice: earn straight A’s, dual enroll at Palm Beach State, and see where it might lead. Michael listened. Not only did he succeed in his classes, he discovered something unexpected — that college could feel like home.

That sense of belonging grew even deeper after he joined PBSC’s Next Gen Summer Bridge program. “It gave me a taste of college life and the peace of mind I didn’t know I needed,” he says.

How the Honors College sparked his leadership journey
One program stood out above all: the Honors College. Initially drawn to the opportunities it offered, Derilus soon earned a Presidential Honors College Scholarship and became deeply involved in student life.

Today, he serves as the Honors College historian, but, more importantly, he’s learned how powerful leadership can be when it’s rooted in service.

“I realized how much I enjoyed taking on challenges and helping others find their place here at PBSC, the way I did,” he explains.

Professor Kevin Coakley, the Honors College liaison who recommended him for the position, describes Derilus as a student who doesn’t just participate — he lifts others up. “His leadership and commitment to both academics and campus life are truly impressive.”

What’s next
Derilus officially took his seat at his first District Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 19. As student trustee, he hopes to shine a light on the experiences of all students — and especially those like him, who are the first in their families to step foot on a college campus.

“My journey is proof that you don’t have to start with everything figured out,” he says. “What matters is being open to opportunities and finding people who believe in your potential.” Students can connect with Derilus directly at studenttrustee@pbsc.edu.
