PBSC's Phi Theta Kappa Delta Omicron leads the charge for mental health awareness
The Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Delta Omicron Chapter at Palm Beach State College’s Lake Worth Campus is setting a new standard for student-led initiatives focused on mental health. As part of their Honors in Action project, students are working to address the urgent need for mental health support within the campus community.
This dedicated group has undergone Mental Health First Aid training, empowering them to recognize and respond to signs of mental health issues among their peers. The goal is not only to spread awareness but also to take direct action by becoming certified peer counselors in suicide prevention. This initiative is supported by the College’s Counseling Center, with which they are closely collaborating to offer immediate resources to those in need.
On September 24, the PTK Delta Omicron Chapter hosted a Suicide Prevention Awareness event in collaboration with the national organization Gift of Life. The event, held at the Martin Luther King Plaza, on the Lake Worth Campus, brought together students, faculty, and staff to discuss the importance of mental health, share available resources, and register stem cell and bone marrow donors in support of those fighting blood cancer.
The event highlighted the ongoing effort to break the stigma surrounding mental health discussions, encouraging open dialogue, and underscoring the importance of reaching out for help. Attendees were also introduced to the invaluable services offered by the College’s Counseling Center, further emphasizing the supportive environment that exists within Palm Beach State College.
Looking ahead, the PTK Delta Omicron Chapter plans to expand their mental health advocacy efforts. Beyond hosting events, they are developing plans to provide ongoing peer support, serve as mental health ambassadors across campus, and actively engage in suicide prevention training. Their dedication to this cause reflects PTK’s commitment to scholarship, leadership, and service, while ensuring that students know they are never alone in their struggles.
If you or someone you know is struggling, remember that help is available. The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can be reached by calling or texting 988 for immediate support. Additionally, Palm Beach State College students can access the Center for Student Well-being and Counseling for mental health services and other resources.
The PTK Delta Omicron Chapter encourages everyone to take part in these ongoing mental health awareness efforts. Whether it’s learning how to support a friend in need, taking advantage of counseling services, or simply spreading awareness, each action helps to create a campus culture of care and understanding.
