Beachcomber photo editor wins second place in national competition

Alfred Evans, photo editor for the Beachcomber student newspaper, has won second place in the College Media Association Shoot Out 2014 competition for his image of a welder working at the construction site of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. 

The photography competition was held during the College Media Association’s Spring National Media Convention in New York City March 12-15.  Students were given one day to shoot, edit and caption images related to the theme “A Day in the Life of New York City.”

A panel of 19 professionals, non-participating college student photojournalists and various educators judged the entries after the conference and selected the top three winners plus two honorable mentions from among 31 images submitted. The winners were notified March 27.

Evans, who holds an A.A.S. in criminal justice and an A.S. in crime scene technology, is now pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in information technology with a concentration in security & network assurance (IT forensics).

He opened his own photography business in 2012. He said his PBSC education is giving him the training he needs to expand his business to include a forensics photography division.
